History of the Callender Lake Easter Egg Hunt
by Larry Giles
It was approaching Easter in 1985 when three Grandmas from the community decided that we needed a kid celebration for Easter. They took it upon themselves to plan and pull off the first Callender Lake Easter Egg Hunt. Thirty-two years this Saturday their dream carries on. Dee Daniels, Jeanette Skelton and Barbara Blevins were the Grandmas and only Barbara has survived to attend this year.
That first year, the children of Callender Lake met at the children’s park in their Easter bonnets and finery, from there they formed an Easter parade to the center area of the Island. There, they were greeted by the one and only Easter bunny and her two helpers. The children go to hunt and pick up 600 plastic eggs. The eggs were a story in themselves! Plastic Easter eggs did not exist in 1985, however one company had them! The ladies collected the 600 eggs to fill with candy and toys by donations from the community of the eggs that came from the “LEGGS” pantyhose company! At a later time, loose change was added to the egg stuffing.
Today, the egg hunt has moved to the yard of the Community Center and the 600 eggs have grown to 3000! What started by three caring Grandmas has now become the largest event presented by our Recreation Committee.
More members and their families attend this event than any other all year.
We all owe it to that Easter in 1985 when three grandmas cared and saw their dream carried out.
